Comtech Celebrates 25 Years of Excellence in Program and Project Delivery

February 04, 2019

Comtech celebrated an exciting milestone in 2019 by reaching our 25th year in business. Over that time, we have been very fortunate to achieve significant growth in our key market sectors: Transportation & Infrastructure, Industrial & Manufacturing, Energy & Utilities and Buildings & Facilities.

When the company was established in 1994, our goal was not necessarily to be the largest firm but to be consistently regarded as one of the best. Over the years, we are proud to say that we continue to meet this core value that the company was founded on. It is through the continued dedication of our staff that we have achieved our leading position in the industry. And on that basis, we are poised for more significant growth and success in urban transit and infrastructure programs and complex capital projects for industrial manufacturers, public utilities and power generators.

In setting up Comtech, our founders Gary and Jason Claxton recognized a need for a consulting services model that offered private and public sector clients a flexible and collaborative approach to the successful execution of their capital projects. The company, established in Windsor, Ontario, began providing project management, technical and engineering consulting services within the Industrial & Manufacturing sector in both the United States and Canada.

In the early years,  we successfully delivered capital projects, including production plant construction and expansion, manufacturing systems implementation, operations/logistics, facility and capacity management. As we grew, one of our greatest successes was breaking the world record for the fastest manufacturing program launches in automotive history as a tier-1 supplier for one of our global automotive clients.

In the mid-1990s, we successfully expanded into the Energy & Utilities sector, where we provided program/project management and engineering services to implement solar, power and wind generation projects. We continue to expand in this market and have recently begun providing consulting services to Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in the provision of Program and Project Controls Management for the $12B+ Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment Program.

Our expansion into the Transportation & Infrastructure industry continued when in 2008, we were selected by the TTC to provide Program Management and Project Controls services for the $8.5B Transit City Light Rail Transit (LRT) Program. At the time, Transit City was the most extensive urban transit expansion program in the City of Toronto’s history, and we continued to support the program after it transitioned to Metrolinx. In 2012, we began delivering full-scope Program and Project Management consulting services to Metrolinx within their Capital Projects Group (CPG) to deliver over $50 billion of urban transit expansion projects. In 2012, Comtech expanded into aviation with the provision of program and project management services for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) for Pearson International.

Throughout our history, Comtech has engaged with public and private firms in designing and constructing commercial and residential buildings/facilities. Our work included design oversight, project management and construction management services for these projects.

More recently, the company began providing Program and Project Management services for York Region Rapid Transit Corporation (YRRTC) to manage the delivery of the multi-modal vivaNext Program. We also work with Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario for the TTC Scarborough Subway (Line 2 East) Extension Project, and we provide Engineering services for the Yonge Subway Extension (YSE) project.

Our exceptional growth continued in 2019 with two key contract awards. In January, Comtech was selected to provide Quality Management services for the TTC to manage the successful production and delivery of their LRT vehicles. We were also selected to be the Project Controls consultant for IO, which is the largest Public-Private-Partnership (P3) project delivery organization in North America. These wins led to a significant milestone in 2019. We provided services to four of the largest transit delivery organizations in Ontario: the TTC, Metrolinx, IO and YRRTC.
